Start with phpinfo

PHP guidance since 2010.

Create a phpinfo file. Then remove it.

phpinfo() shows your PHP version, loaded settings and extensions: add-ons that your app may need. Keep this report private.

  1. 01 / CREATE

    Keep access restricted

Use a test site or a location protected by your host’s access controls. Save this code as phpinfo.php there.

    <?php phpinfo();
  2. 02 / READ

    Find the active settings

Open the file through your browser. Note “Loaded Configuration File” before you edit settings. The command line may use a different file.

  3. 03 / REMOVE

Close the window into your server

Delete the file when you finish. Request its URL again to check it is gone. Never post the full report publicly.

Keep private details private. The report can reveal paths, server details and environment values. Share only the fields needed for a specific check.

Start with the symptom.

Read the error log first. Change one thing at a time, then repeat the same test.

Uploads fail

Check upload_max_filesize, the per-file cap. Keep post_max_size, the whole request cap, larger. Your app or web server may set another limit.

PHP configuration help

A page goes blank

Look for the error logged at the time of the failed request. Keep errors out of public pages. Record recent changes before you undo them.

Troubleshooting help

An upgrade is due

Check your app’s supported PHP versions. Test plugins and key tasks on a separate copy. Make a backup and check how to restore it.
